R.A. Gray Collection 1863-1959.

The R.A. Gray Collection consists of four items: 1. Civil War letter (1863) written by Gray's Great Uncle, W.D. Howren, and addressed to Lt. J.C. Blake; 2. 3-page World War II letter signed "Buck", Philippine Islands, A.P.O. 715 to "Dear Roy" which was written by another relative of Gray's and which describes a campaign in the mountains. 3. Newspaper clipping from the Tallahassee Democrat, Jan. 9, 1959, which pertains to a talk given to the Tallahassee Historical Society by Dr. J. Russell Reaver that was based on letters written by the Blakes and Cromarties of Miccosukee, Fla. during the Civil War; 4. letter written by Gray, Jan. 12, 1959, to Mrs. Virginia J. Edington, FSU Library, which accompanied the gifts.

R.A. Gray (1882-1975) was born on August 2, 1882 near Concord, Ga. His family moved to northern Florida where Gray was raised, educated and first tried his hand at teaching in a country school at the age of fifteen. He completed his education at South Florida Military College in Bartow, Fla. Before going into state politics, Gray spent nearly ten years in teaching, newspaper work and local government.
